MEMILIKI tubuh yang tidak senormal orang biasa, tidak membuat Muchlis Sulin menjadi orang yang rendah diri. Sebaliknya ia menjadi seorang wartawan yang amat disegani, karena karya dan integritasnya. Majalah sebesar Tempo bahkan pernah memercayai Muchlis sebagai korespondennya untuk Sumatera Tengah.
Muchlis Sulin lahir di Aie Tabik, Kabupaten Limapuluh Kota 23 April 1943. Menjalani pendidikan dasar dan menengah di Payakumbuh, ia merintis karier sebagai jurnalis sejak umur 20-an tahun. Tapi yang terlama adalah sebagai koresponden Majalah Tempo untuk Sumatera Tengah, kemudian Wakil Pemimpin Redaksi Harian Singgalang di Padang.
Muchlis Sulin, bersama Nasrul Sidik, Chairul Harun dan M.Joesfik Helmi merupakan empat serangkai yang mengemudikan redaksi Mingguan Singgalang yang pada permulaan tahun 1980 berubah menjadi surat kabar harian dengan delapan halaman.
Di antara orang-orang Singgalang, Muchlis memang terkenal sebagai editor yang hemat kata. Ia paling tidak suka dengan wartawan yang menulis dengan bertele-tele.
“Langsung sajo, jan manari-nari juo Bung manulih berita,” katanya kalau sudah membaca hasil tulisan para wartawan. Biasanya ada saja yang dia panggil ke mejanya saat mengedit berita para wartawan itu.
Wartawan dan sastrawan Harris Effendi Thahar (kini Prof. Dr) pernah mengalami ketika menyetorkan berita ke meja Muchlis Sulin. Dari dua halaman ketikan yang ia buat, setelah ditukangi Muchlis tinggal kurang setengah halaman. “Hanya itu yang berita, selebihnya adalah cerpen,” katanya kepada Harris yang melongo. Kejadian itu tak pernah dilupakan Harris hingga kini.
Muchlis mengajarkan para wartawan Singgalang bahwa menulis ringkas itu penting, tapi menulis dengan mendalam juga penting. Nah, yang tidak penting menurutnya adalah menulis dengan kata-kata dan kalimat yang tidak diperlukan oleh pembaca.
Mazhab menulis ala Tempo itu terus menular dari Muchlis kepada hampir seluruh wartawan Singgalang ketika itu.
Selain itu, ia amat memperhatikan para wartawan yang memiliki talenta. Salah satu yang menjadi perhatiannya adalah Fachrul Rasyid HF. Dalam salah satu tulisan kenangan tentang Muchlis Sulin, Fachrul Rasyid menulis bahwa setelah dirinya menikah, Muchlis Sulin yang menawarkannya untuk bergabung dengan Harian Singgalang.
Meskipun tidak termasuk dalam ‘shaf’ para seniman yang dikumpulkan oleh Basril Djabar untuk mengelola Harian Singgalang, Muchlis Sulin tidak canggung berada di antara para seniman yang memang banyak ‘aneh’nya itu. Setiap hari berkumpul di lantai III Harian Singgalang itu teman-teman seperti A.A. Navis, Chairul Harun, M. Yusfik Helmi, Wisran Hadi, Abrar Yusra, Hamid Djabar, Makmur Hendrik, Harris Effendi Thahar, dan lain-lain. Seluruhnya kemudian ikut menjadi ‘orang dapur’ di harian Singagalang. Tapi Muchlis bisa menyesuaikan diri dalam pergaulan dengan mereka.
Salah satu yang menarik dari pribadi Muchlis adalah daya kritisnya terhadap berbagai hal yang berkembang di daerah ini. Ia menjadi peka dengan berbagai kejadian, lalu dalam rapat redaksi ia sampaikan sebagai hal-hal yang harus dilacak dan dicari informasinya sampai dapat oleh para wartawan Singgalang di seluruh Sumatera Barat.
Sampai hal yang sekecil-kecil dan sepribadi-pribadi pun jarang yang luput dari perhatian Muchlis. Eko Yanche Edrie yang pada tahun 1985 masih bertugas sebagai koresponden Singgalang di Solok satu hari bercerita bahwa dirinya harus berusaha mencari tahu seorang staf camat yang kawin berselingkuh. Ini karena pagi-pagi Eko sudah mendapat surat tugas dari armada Singgalang yang diteken langsung oleh Muchlis Sulin.
“Bung cari sampai dapat dan tulis beritanya dengan berimbang,” tulis Muchlis pada bagian bawah nota tugas yang hanya diketik pada kertas koran.
Menurut Eko, itu hanya berita kecil saja, karena itu ia mencoba mengabaikan. Tapi itulah Muchlis, dua hari kemudian datang lagi surat tugas yang sama. Karena tidak juga dikerjakan, genap sepekan, datang surat teguran dari Muchlis Sulin untuk Eko yang dianggap melalaikan tugas dengan tuduhan baru: Eko main mata dengan staf camat itu.
Begitulah Muchlis, tidak senang diam dan apa-apa yang direncanakannya dalam rapat redaksi harus bisa dicapai paling tidak 90 persen.
Hubungannya dengan Majalah Tempo yang terpelihara baik, membuat Muchlis acap mengajak para redaktur senior Tempo berceramah di Singgalang. Ed Zoelverdi, Karni Ilyas, Hery Komar, Yusril Djalinus bahkan Pemimpin Perusahaan Tempo H. Machtum diajak Muchlis menceramahi segenap awak Singgalang. Maksudnya adalah untuk membuka cakrawala dan meluaskan wawasan.
Sayang, Muchlis Sulin yang dianggap suhu “jurnalistik hemat kata” oleh para wartawan Singgalang, tidak berumur panjang. Ia sudah lama menderita mag kronis, dan makin menjadi-jadi setelah ia melepas jabatan Wakil Pemimpin Redaksi dan beralih menjadi Wakil Ketua Dewan Redaksi sekaligus Kepala Badan Diklat dan Palatihan.
Berkali-kali ia harus masuk rumah sakit, akhirnya Muchlis Sulin Datuak Marajo Basa meninggal dunia pada 13 September 1991 dalam usia 48 tahun. Jenazahnya dimakamkan di kampung halamannya, karena dia seorang penghulu.
