KETIKA awal semester satu jurusan ekonomi manajemen di STIE Kerjasama Yogyakarta, saya pernah berdoa tentang dua hal permohonan. Bisa menulis dan bisa bermain gitar. Allah Swt. mengabulkannya. Tapi baru satu.
Saya tidak bisa bermain gitar, tapi baru bisa sedikit menulis. Saya tidak bergabung ke Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa (UKM) Musik, meski hingga kini menyukai musik.
Padahal di kampus, Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa (UKM) Musik, difasilitas studio yang lengkap dengan peralatan musik.
Bahkan, salah seorang pendiri kampus, Raden Sigit Wiriadiningrat, yang masih darah biru keraton Yogyakarta Hadiningrat, tidak saja mewariskan kampus yang sangat mengah dengan sekitar 12.000 mahasiswa, tapi juga mewariskan seperangkat perlengkapan gamelan yang super lengkap.
Gamelan ini, menurut para senior adalah gamelan pusaka. Konon pada malam tertentu, lewat tengah malam, akan berbunyi dengan sendirinya. Entah siapa yang memainkannya. Yang jelas rumor ini berdedar dari mulut ke mulut.
Gamelan ini disimpan dan terbungkus rapi di lantai satu, gedung tujuh lantai perpustakaan. Ruangan penyimpanannya persis di sebelah kanan pintu masuk gedung atau dekat lift. Saya beberapa kali memasuki ruang itu.
Pernah suatu waktu, diam-diam lewat tengah malam saya menyelinap masuk. Lalu, memukul beberapa kali gong dan kulintang. Sejumlah aktivis yang mangkal di kampus heboh.
Gamelan itu hanya pada momen tertentu dimainkan. Seperti pada waktu Dies Natalis. Sebelum dimainkan ada ritual khusus. Kental aroma mistik.
Saya bergabung dengan Lembaga Pers Mahasiswa yang menerbitkan majalah bulanan (yang sering telat terbit karena urusan ongkos cetak) mahasiswa Likuid.
Ketika masih bersekolah di sekolah dasar hingga SMK, pelajaran Bahasa Indinesia, khususnya mengarang bebas sangat saya sukai. Nilainya tidak jelek jelek amat. Kalau tidak angka delapan, ya angka sembilan.
Suatu ketika saya bertanya ke salah seorang guru yang mengajarkan Bahasa Indonesia, mengapa tidak memberi nilai sepuluh?
“Angka sepuluh untuk matematika. Kalau Bahasa Indonesia nilai tertinggi sembilan. Matematika ilmu pasti,” begitu katanya.
Dalam perjalanannya, menulis ternyata lebih rumit dari matematika, setidaknya menurut saya.
Menulis tidak semudah membaca hasil yang ditulis. Untuk bisa menulis dengan baik, tentu saja ilmu dasar harus dikuasai: bahasa. Tapi, itu saja tak cukup.
Dalam hal ini, menulis yang saya maksud adalah kemampuan jurnalisme. Paling sedikit ada tiga jenis artikel hasil reportase yaitu hard news, indepth reporting dan investigasi.
Meski belakangan muncul istilah dalam cara penyajian yaitu jurnalisme sastrawi. Iwan Piliang ketika workshop di Bukit Tinggi, Sumatera Barat, pada September 2008, menyebutnya dengan istilah literary journalism.
Menulis tiada lain dari membaca. Maka menulis itu, kata Iwan adalah Iqro: baca. Untuk dapat iqro, kata Iwan, harus menjaga independensi, punya keberanian dan kebeningan hati. Dengan rendah hati seseorang akan peka dan bijaksana. Sebab, dengan ini semua maka baru bisa memuliakan insani.
Perkara keberanian tidak main-main. Sebab, alam dunia jurnalisme ini menjadi prasyarat pokok yang harus dipunyai.
Soal keberanian, suatu ketika, dalam worshop sepekan di Hotel Grand Cempaka, Jakarta, salah seorang mentor, wartawan senior dari Pusat Jurnalisme Investigasi Filipina, Malou Mangahas, mengisahkan pengalamannya melakukan peliputan investigasi.
Berbulan bulan perempuan bertubuh mungil ini harus hidup dalam pelarian dari tim intelijen militer Ferdinand Marcos.
Dia akhirnya ditangkap sebagai tahanan politik pada 1980-1981. Sekitar dua ton dokumen terkait investigasinya dibawa ke DPR Filipina, sebagai bukti kejahatan penguasa di sana.
Tubuh Malou Mangahas memang mungil, tapi nyalinya, rasanya sulit ditandingi.
Nah, sejak saya merasa dikabulkan itu, saya terus berupaya agar bisa menulis dengan baik dan benar. Namun setiap kali mencoba selalu saja saya merasa gagal. Saya merasa tulisan saya sangat jelek.
Kelihatannya memang mudah menulis sederhana, mudah dipahami, faktual, mendalam dan sesuai kaidah jurnalisme. Faktanya tidaklah demikian. Sangat sulit.
Kemampuan saya dalam memahami bahasa dengan baik dan benar selalu saja di bawah angka sepuluh. Apalagi bicara keberanian, sangat jauh dari kata ini.
Saya merasa, Tuhan memang mengabulkan doa saya, selangkah melewati pintu depan. Baru sedikit hijab dunia tulis menulis terbuka. Perlu banyak waktu dan kesungguhan untuk memahami dan mendalaminya. Sebab, menulis bukan sekadar menyusun kata. (*)
